Hamlet adding 4-way stops on Spring Street

HAMLET — Several four-way stops will be set up along Spring Street as a new traffic safety measure.

According to City Manager John Terziu, there have been more than 120 wrecks reported on Spring Street since 2023, a number he called “concerning.”

Terziu says the frequency of wrecks “made it clear that additional traffic control measures are necessary to improve safety for motorists and pedestrians.”

The city manager added that Spring Street has “historically been used as a cut-through route” by motorists trying to get around U.S. 74 Business, “which undermines the intent of the corridor’s existing ‘No Thru Trucks’ restrictions and increases traffic volume in residential areas.”

“These changes are intended to slow traffic, discourage cut-through use, and improve overall roadway safety,” Terziu said.

The four intersections on Spring Street becoming four-way stops are those at Wilmington, High, Kent and Corning streets.

Terziu said signs are being ordered and installation will begin once they’re delivered.

“To help ensure a smooth transition, the Hamlet Police Department will have an increased presence in the area during the first few weeks after the signs are installed,” Terziu said. “This will help raise awareness and encourage drivers to adjust to the new traffic pattern.”

Terziu said the city will also be erecting no-parking signs in certain areas “to improve visibility and reinforce existing city ordinances, which will further enhance safety along the corridor.”

“Our goal is simple: reduce accidents, improve visibility, slow traffic, and make Spring Street safer for everyone who travels through Hamlet,” Terziu said. “I appreciate the community’s cooperation as we implement these safety improvements and will continue to keep the public informed as progress is made.”
