HAMLET — An afternoon woods fire burned about an acre and a half off of Boyd Lake Road Thursday.

According to Hamlet Fire Department Assistant Chief Richard Lassiter, the call came in around 3:25 p.m. and crews responded to 145 Wheeler Lane.

Lassiter said the fire started from the burning of a garden spot which was spread by the wind. The fire burned several appliances that were being stored outside as well as a wooden fence, but no structures were damaged.

The N.C. Forest Service assisted on the call.

Lassiter said crews responded to a structure fire on Dirt Road, off of N.C. 38 near the South Carolina Line, just after 5 p.m. Saturday.

When firefighters arrived, the home was fully engulfed in flames and heavy smoke. Lassiter said it was a total loss.

He added that the power company said there was no electrical service at the home, which was undergoing renovations.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
