ROCKINGHAM — A man with prior drug-related convictions is accused of trying to rob another man at gunpoint.
An arrest warrant alleges that 34-year-old Corey Jhontaius Jones, of Hamlet, produced an American Tactical Aloha Maxx AR pistol on April 20 and attempted to take an unknown value of currency from a man operating Pines Game Room on Pineleigh Avenue.
(NOTE: Jail records show his middle name as “Jataviya,” and court records list that as an alias.)
The warrant was issued on the same day as the reported incident. However, Jones wasn’t arrested until Sept. 25.
Jones is charged with one count each of attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon and possession of a firearm by a felon.
He was booked into the Richmond County Jail where he is being held on a combined $140,000 secured bond. Jones is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 9.
Records with the N.C. Department of Adult Correction show Jones was convicted in 2012 on two counts of selling a Schedule II controlled substance.
Other prior convictions include:
2008 - resisting a public officer
2011 - possession of a Schedule VI controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia
Records show he was given probation in each case.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
NOTE: This story has been updated to include the defendant's surname, which was inadvertly left out on the first reference. 12:37 p.m. 9-9-25.
