Hamlet man charged with robbing, shooting woman

ROCKINGHAM — Investigators with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office have charged a man after he allegedly demanded a money transfer.

According to a warrant, 53-year-old Clyde Wayne Butler, of Hamlet, threatened to kill a woman if she did not transfer $1,000 to him Oct. 4 while at the victim’s home on Zion Church Road.

A warrant shows Butler received the money and investigators say the victim was shot in the leg. She has since been released from the hospital and is recovering, according to the sheriff’s office.

Butler was arrested Nov. 4 and charged with one felony count each of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and robbery with a dangerous weapon, as well as one misdemeanor count of communicating threats.

He is being held in the Richmond County Jail under a $150,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in court Nov. 16.

Online records show Butler has no other pending charges or previous convictions in the state.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
