HAMLET — Police have charged a homeless man with having several types of drugs and a stolen SUV.
According to warrants issued to the Hamlet Police Department, 29-year-old Terry Michael Poplin, who is listed as being homeless, was caught Nov. 29 with a stolen 2004 Honda CRV.
Warrants allege that Poplin was also found with an unspecified quantity of methamphetamine, amphetamine and dextroamphetamine, and buprenorphine hydrochloride and naloxone hydrochloride.
Buprenorphine is used to treat opioid use disorder and naloxone is used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.
Poplin is also accused of getting out of a vehicle and running from the Hamlet officer who attempted to initiate a traffic stop.
He was arrested and charged with: one felony count each of possession of a motor vehicle and possession of methamphetamine; and one misdemeanor count each of simple possession of a Schedule II controlled substance, simple possession of a Schedule III controlled substance, and resisting a public officer.
Poplin was booked into the Richmond County Jail where he is being held on a combined $26,500 secured bond. His first court appearance was Dec. 1 and a probable cause hearing is scheduled for Dec. 11. A follow-up court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 18.
Records with the N.C. Department of Adult Correction show Poplin has the following prior convictions:
Richmond County
2019 - misdemeanor breaking and entering
2023 - misdemeanor larceny, possession of stolen goods; assault on a female
Moore County
2022 - larceny from merchant (two counts)
2023 - larceny of a motor vehicle, possession of stolen goods
2024 - possession of drug paraphernalia (two counts)
Records show Poplin was released from prison in April and his parole ended in June.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
