HAMLET - The Hamlet Public Library has been a very busy place this summer, offering a multitude of activities for children as well as adults. In addition to craft classes that have been offered twice a week, special programs such as “Panning for Gold,” “Mad Science," “Rocking with the Richmond County Band," and “Rock Climbing” have carried through with the summer theme “LIBRARIES ROCK!”

Reading throughout the summer has also been promoted, as contests tracking books read in three different age categories will culminate with winners being named on Friday, August 10 also. The categories are for children ages 12 and under, ages 13-17, and ages 18 and up. First and second place prizes will be awarded in each category.

As the summer draws to an end and students prepare to return to school, a Fun Day will be held on Friday, August 10 at the library at 302 West Main Street in Hamlet. The street in front will be blocked off to allow a variety of activities, including a Super Soaker sponsored and supervised by the Hamlet Fire Department.

Other events include a Game Truck with video games and Karaoke, Balloon Making by Joy the Clown, face painting, a visit from the motorcycle group Ol Skool Tribe, Snow Cones from Friends of the Library, Corn Hole, and Jenga. Special guests include a Hamlet Police Department K9 and some area mascots. The public is invited to attend, with the program lasting from 10 a.m. - 12 noon.

In conjunction with GameStop, the Hamlet Public Library will be sponsoring a Game Afternoon for Teens on August 14th at 3:00 p.m.  Due to limited space, it will be necessary to sign up at the library, or you may call (910) 582-3477 to register. Aaron’s will be contributing the use of four large televisions for this special event, and video games and other games will be available.

For more information about what is happening at the Hamlet Public Library, feel free to give them a call at (910) 582-3477. The library is open Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m.
