HAMLET — A caretaker is facing a felony charge, accused of abusing an elderly woman.

An arrest warrant, issued to the Hamlet Police Department, alleges that 63-year-old Sandra Shaw Tyson caused mental and physical injury to a woman she was taking care of on Oct. 28..

While no specific injuries are listed, the warrant notes: “The injury was serious.”

The warrant was issued Oct. 29 and Tyson was arrested that day, charged with a single felony count of abuse of a disabled or elderly person with serious injury. She was booked into the Richmond County Jail on a $25,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in court Nov. 12.

Tyson was convicted of assault and battery on March 30 against the same victim in the current case, according to records with the N.C. Department of Adult correction and state court system. She was charged with a probation violation on April 23.

Court records show Tyson was previously convicted of driving while impaired in 2024.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
