HAMLET — Raleigh Street will be closed for several days later this month for upgrades to a railroad crossing.
According to Angela Nellis of Southern Commercial Development, CSX Transportation will have a team in town to replace the rail at the crossing.
Nellis said the work will result in a total closure of the roadway — meaning no traffic will be allowed across the track until the job is complete — and detours.
The street is expected to close at some point on Monday, Oct. 20 — the exact time has not yet been determined — and is expected to reopen by 5 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 22 — just days before the Seaboard Festival.
Nellis notes that dates are subject to change due to weather and other unforeseen circumstances.
Southern Commercial Development provides traffic control and detour signage for CSX for crossing closures.
The Main Street crossing at the Hamlet Depot has been closed for several months for a project to bring the Amtrak platform into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
