ROCKINGHAM — The location name has changed, but the cause remains the same: supporting Richmond County Special Olympics.
Chris Sachs, owner of the Hide-A-Way Tavern on Billy Covington Road is keeping the tradition going for the Annual Buddy Roe Memorial Ride on Saturday.
Sachs said he had worked with Roebuck since the first ride 10 years ago.
Following Roebuck’s death earlier last year, Sachs and his wife, Felicia, bought the bar, Buddy Roe’s, from the previous owner’s estate and reopened it as the Hide-A-Way in August.
“We want to keep it in his honor because the Special Olympics meant a lot to him,” Sachs said Friday.
Registration for the ride starts at noon. The cost for single riders is $20 and $30 for doubles, which includes a plate.
Sachs said he anticipates participation from several motorcycle and riding clubs including Ol Skool Tribe and Playaz Elite.
The route will begin and end at the bar, with a stop at Cox’s Double Eagle Harley-Davidson in Pinehurst.
There will also be a 50/50 raffle and silent auction, as well as T-shirts available for purchase.
Shane Glaze and friends will get the music going at 4 p.m., followed by four singers — Nikki Fletcher, Susan Davis, Charity Davis and David Dixon — performing during the 5 o’clock hour.
Longtime bandmates Eric Whitfield and Chuck Smith will take over the mics at 6 p.m.
A $10 cover charge includes food and music.
All events will be outdoors and there is a 20 percent chance of showers predicted.
“It can rain all it wants after 8 o’clock,” Sachs said.
