ROCKINGHAM — A man is facing multiple charges related to the alleged theft of nearly $1,000 in merchandise — mostly tobacco products — from Walmart.

According to warrants, 24-year-old Taylor Alexander Thornton, of “the streets of Rockingham,” broke into a building at 720 U.S. 74 (Business) — the address for Walmart — on Feb. 25.

Thornton is accused of stealing a black backpack, black coat, Camel and Newport cigarettes, and miscellaneous Copenhagen products — all valued at $939.03.

When he was arrested March 1, Thornton was allegedly in possession of cigar wraps, glass pipes and a container with white residue.

Thornton is charged with one felony count each of breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering, and possession of stolen goods, as well as one misdemeanor count each of possession of marijuana paraphernalia and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He is being held in the Richmond County Jail on a combined $17,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in court March 20.

Records with the N.C. Department of Adult Correction show Thornton was convicted of misdemeanor breaking and entering and misdemeanor larceny in 2023 and four counts of misdemeanor larceny in 2024. He was given probation in each case.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
