ROCKINGHAM — Jeff Joyner is continuing his public service to his fellow veterans through a gubernatorial appointment.

Joyner is one of four men recently appointed by Gov. Josh Stein to the N.C. Veterans Affairs Commission.

The commission “functions to advise the secretary of Military and Veterans Affairs on matters relating to the affairs of veterans in North Carolina, to maintain a continuing review of the operation and budgeting of existing programs for Veterans and their dependents, and to promulgate rules and regulations concerning the awarding of scholarships for children of North Carolina veterans,” according to the state website.

Joyner served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS James Monroe in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea as a launcher technician from 1964 to 1968.

Since 1970, Joyner has been involved with the American Legion, on the local level with Post 147, as well as the state and national levels, including positions as the N.C. Legion department commander and as a national executive committeman.

Joyner also serves on the Richmond County Soil and Water Conservation District Board of Supervisors.

The other three recent appointees are: Marine Corps veteran Pastor Charles Dudley of Craven County; Army veteran Louis D. Harvin-Ravin of Durham County; and David Grier Martin III, Army Reserve vet and former secretary of the North Carolina Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.

The appointments were among several listed in a press release issued by the governor’s office on April 4.

Joyner is the first Richmond County resident appointed by Stein since the new governor took office in January.

However, Richmond County native and former state representative Ken Goodman (now living in Moore County) was reappointed by Stein to the N.C. Industrial Commission in March.

Several Richmond County residents and natives were appointed to various boards and commissions during former governor Roy Cooper’s terms.
