HAMLET — The middle of Monday’s American Legion Junior baseball game was disrupted by rain.

The Hamlet Post 49 Junior baseball team found itself trailing Eastern Randolph 12-3 with one out in the bottom of the third inning when the game was delayed.

After a brief period of heavy rain, the game was suspended. Head coach Robert Smith said the Area 3 Conference game will be completed at a later date.

Post 81 scored five runs in both the first and second innings and added two runs in the third.

Hamlet scored two runs in the home half of the first before tacking on a run in the second.

Colton Brown started on the mound and allowed four earned runs in one inning. Colson Smith also pitched an inning and gave up three runs (two earned).

Hamlet dug into its bullpen with two more pitchers — Colton Nelson and Jake Veach. Nelson surrendered five runs (two earned) in a third of an inning and Veach put up zeroes in two-thirds of an inning.

Making it 5-2 in the bottom of the first, Hamlet used an RBI single from Julius Bowden and Noah Stubbs (single) scored on a passed ball.

An RBI groundout to shortstop by Brown in the bottom of the second plated Jaxton Watson (hit-by-pitch) for Post 49’s other run in the second.

Bowden, Stubbs and Veach all had a single before the game was called.

When the game resumes, Hamlet will be at the plate with a runner on first base with one away.

Hamlet (4-7, 1-1 Area 3) will travel to Moore County Post 12 Thursday for another Area 3 contest. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
