ROCKINGHAM — On the heels of Richmond Senior High School’s upset win over Seventy-First High School Tuesday, the junior varsity and ninth grade basketball teams completed the sweep against the Falcons.

The varsity Raiders stunned the Falcons 75-71 on the road, making it the first time since 2004 that Richmond left Fayetteville with a win. In junior varsity action, head coach Tony Terry’s squad put together a 59-43 victory, while the Ninth Grade Academy Raiders clipped the Falcons 39-26.

JV Raiders soar past Falcons on Stroman’s double-double

Sophomore Dalton Stroman wasn’t the Raiders’ leading scorer Tuesday, but he was the only Richmond player to reach double-digits in points and rebounds. Behind a 10-point, 13-rebound performance by Stroman, the Raiders managed to pick up their fourth win of the year.

Richmond scored 15 points in each of the first two quarters, as freshman De Shon Watson had a strong first and fourth quarter, and led the team with 15 points on the night.

A Watson three-pointer and two more field goals gave him seven points in the opening frame, as fellow freshman Jalen David splashed down the first of his team-high three three-pointers. Stroman only had two points in the first, but netted eight more points, a team-high, in the second stanza.

Leading at halftime, the JV Raiders used six points from sophomore Dayon Bright in the third quarter. David hit another three and saw his point total climb to 13, as he finished the night as the second leading scorer.

Watson, who netted just two points in the middle quarters, dropped six more in the fourth to bookend a strong start and finish to the game. Freshman Travion Dumas scored six points in the second half on two triples, while Bright tacked 10 total points on the scoreboard.

Sophomore Jakolbe Baldwin scored one point, but his work under the rim led him to collect eight rebounds, the second most behind Stroman. Richmond (4-9) will look to continue moving in the right direction when the Raiders travel to Scotland High School Friday at 6:00 p.m.

NGA Raiders use strong first half to rout Seventy-First

Across town at Richmond County Ninth Grade Academy in Hamlet, head coach Taivon Jones and the ninth-grade Raiders improved to 5-1 on the season. Offensively, the Raiders were almost even, netting 20 in the first half, followed by 19 in the second half.

But it was the strong Raider defense in the first half that limited the visiting Falcons to just nine total points in the first 16 minutes. KeSean Ingram hit a three-pointer in the opening frame, while teammate Harley Honeycutt drained a free throw and a field goal for the team’s six points in the quarter.

The second quarter was NGA’s best scoring frame of the game, as five players combined for 14 points. Jamari Broady tallied all five of his points in the second, as teammate Cason Douglas got on the board for the first time with a field goal and a free throw.

Douglas would finish the night as the team’s leading scorer with 12 points, with nine of them coming in the second half. Up 11 at the break, the Raiders used seven points in the third quarter by Douglas, as Ingram and Xavier Collazo each added two points.

The Falcons managed to outscore Richmond 9-8 in the final quarter, but four points from Honeycutt, two more from Douglas and a bucket by Javares Stanback were enough to maintain the lead.

Jones and company will be back in action and looking for their sixth win of the year when they travel to Scotland High School on Friday. Tip off is set for 4:30 p.m.
