ROCKINGHAM - Exactly five years after killing one man and shooting another outside a Hamlet bar, Mitchell Green was found guilty.

The jury came back after a short deliberation Friday with a unanimous verdict: guilty on all counts.

Green, 26, of Hoffman, was on trial in the shooting death of the late Terry Smith and the shooting of Tyrone Player on Feb. 7, 2015.

According to the Hamlet Police Department, Green and Smith had gotten into an argument over Green’s vehicle after midnight that fateful day.

Green shot Smith several times in the upper body on Main Street, outside the Sports Connection bar. Smith died at the scene.

Player was also shot in the leg.

Police arrested Green just after sunrise later that morning. He was charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

Green was sentenced to life without parole on the murder charge. He also received a 140-180-month consecutive sentence for attempted murder with a 60-90-month concurrent sentence for the assault conviction.

Before court ended, Green gave notice of appeal.

Records show a charge of simple affray was dismissed in 2018.

Green’s only prior conviction was for simple assault in 2010, according to records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction.
