ROCKINGHAM — Mirroring what the varsity team did Tuesday, the Richmond Senior High School junior varsity girls’ basketball team won big over Scotland High School.
Playing on their home court for the first time this season, the JV Lady Raiders used a running clock to defeat the JV Lady Scots 57-9.
Getting back to the .500 mark on the season, Richmond and head coach Tonia Breeden played the entire second half with a running clock thanks to a 37-point lead at halftime.
Seven JV Lady Raiders scored, including three players in double digits — Sophomore Amonie McNeil (15 points), freshman Emoni Covington (11 points) and freshman Emani Ingram (10 points).
Adding to the team’s win were sophomore Erin Drumwright (9 points), sophomore Kaylee Connor (6 points), freshman Aubree Brewington (4 points) and freshman Lyra Newton (2 points).
“This was a good win for us,” Breeden said. “Everyone was able to score, which was great to see and get some experience for all our players.
“We still have some little mistakes we want to clean up before we get to conference play. But overall, I’m pleased with how the girls played and hustled.”
Taking a 20-3 lead at the end of the first quarter, Richmond was led by Drumwright’s eight points. She hit six foul shots and added a bucket. Ingram added four points in the early going with two field goals.
Connor connected on a three-pointer to start her scoring and Covington also scored three points thanks to a bucket and a free throw. McNeil had two points in the first quarter.
A 24-4 run in the second quarter put the JV Lady Raiders way ahead. All seven Lady Raiders scored in the quarter.
McNeil netted four field goals for eight points to give her 10 points at the break. Ingram added another four points from the field and Brewington and Connor each scored three points thanks to a basket and a shot from the line.
A three-pointer from Covington added to the lead, as two points from Newton and a free throw by Drumwright gave Richmond a 44-7 lead at halftime.
With the clock running the entire second half, the JV Lady Raiders scored seven points in the third quarter and six points in the fourth stanza, all while holding Scotland to just two points in the entire half.
Covington had five of the team’s points in the third thanks to two field goals and the completion of an and-one opportunity. Ingram scored her final basket to make it 51-7 heading into the fourth.
McNeil picked her scoring back up with her final five points in the closing eight minutes, scoring two baskets and a free throw. Brewington capped the team’s effort with a foul shot.
