PEMBROKE — Preventative mistakes is what head coach Tonia Breeden said hurt the Richmond Senior High School junior varsity girls’ basketball team Thursday.
The only Richmond squad in action, the JV Lady Raiders suffered a non-conference loss at Purnell Swett High School.
Missing too many open shots and free throws, as well as giving away possession too often, the JV Lady Raiders lost 31-21.
“This was a tough loss because we really beat ourselves,” Breeden said. “We had way too many turnovers, missed layups and missed free throws. As a team, we were 16-of-27 from the line.
“We’ll look at it as part of the learning process and hopefully the girls will grow from their mistakes,” she added. “We will definitely be back in the lab working on these things.”
Richmond trailed 11-4 at the end of the first quarter and entered halftime down 18-7. Held to single digits again in the third quarter, the JV Lady Raiders saw their deficit grow to 27-10.
The best quarter of the game was the final stanza for Richmond, which went on an 11-4 run.
Four players scored in the loss, led by sophomore point guard Erin Drumwright’s nine points.
Sophomore Alexis Mosley had five points, freshman Lyra Newton added four points and freshman Emani Ingram scored three points.
Up next for the JV Lady Raiders (1–2) will be their home opener Tuesday against non-conference Scotland High School. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
