ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond Senior High School junior varsity boys’ soccer team couldn’t score Wednesday.
In their only match this week, the JV Raiders lost 5-0 to Cape Fear High School.
Richmond was shut out for the second time in as many matches. The JV Colts scored twice in the first half before adding three insurance goals in the final 35 minutes.
Cape Fear scored both goals of its first-half goals in the first 21 minutes of the match.
Sophomore keeper Jake Gardner, who had a busy half, made his first save on a corner kick in the fifth minute. On the ensuing counter, sophomore Jayden Scire had a shot on net that was stopped.
A foul in the box in the ninth minute led to a penalty kick goal for the JV Colts. The shot beat Gardner to his right.
Sophomore Kerick Hairston Jr. had two chances in the 13th minute to score. His first shot was stopped and he sent a second-chance rocket off the left post.
Cape Fear scored its second goal on a long ball behind the defense that was chipped over Gardner’s head from about 25 yards.
Richmond’s other two quality chances to score in the first half came from sophomore JaVeion Littlejohn and freshman Hector Perez. Both shots were from close range but were right at the goalkeeper.
Gardner made a trio of saves in the final eight minutes of the half to maintain the two-goal deficit. Two of them he used his legs or body to stop 1v1 runs and the other saw him make a sliding stop and gather the rebound opportunity.
The JV Colts scored their final three goals in the second half, starting with a tally in the 38th minute on a shot to the back post.
Making it 4-0 in the 45th minute, a low shot on a 1v1 run ended Gardner’s night. Playing 20 of the final 25 minutes in net was freshman Eric Hicks, followed by sophomore Francisco Sanchez.
Hicks made numerous saves in the danger zone, including a strike from distance and two saves in the box on back-to-back shots. Sanchez didn’t face any threats in his time in net.
Sophomore Ben Monroe sent a free kick on frame that was saved in the 51st minute, one of Richmond’s better chances to score in the second half.
Cape Fear’s final goal came in the 52nd minute, a roller to the back post past Hicks.
The JV Raiders (4-3) won’t play again until Sept. 8 at home against St. Pauls High School. The non-conference match will start at 5:15 p.m.
