ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond Senior High School boys’ junior varsity basketball team picked up a pair of wins this week.
At home for both games, the JV Raiders took both Sandhills Athletic Conference games over Union Pines and Lee County high schools on Tuesday and Friday.
With the victories, the JV Raiders improved to 6-8 on the season.
Fast start helps JV Raiders win big against Union Pines
During Tuesday’s game, the JV Raiders used big runs in the first half to earn a 58-34 win over Union Pines, completing the season sweep of the JV Vikings.
Richmond pounced out to an 18-3 lead after the first quarter, setting the tone for a 31-10 lead at halftime. In the final two quarters, the JV Raiders outscored Union Pines 27-24.
Freshman Kerick Hairston Jr. led the way with 13 points, scoring eight points in the first half which included two three-pointers. Sophomore Josiah Brewington added 10 points, scoring eight points in the big first half.
Spreading the scoring around, seven other JV Raiders found the basket in the win. Sophomore Landon Legrand had seven points, followed by sophomore teammate Elijah Peterkin (six points).
Freshmen Devin Haynes and JaVeion Littlejohn both had five points. Netting four points apiece were sophomores BJ Hinson, Jacques Jackson and Adrion Pore.
JV Raiders cruise at home over Lee County
In Friday’s weekly finale, the result was a 66-39 win for Richmond over visiting Lee County, which also made it two wins against the JV Yellow Jackets this season.
A close start to the game put Richmond ahead 16-14 after the first quarter. Using a 15-point differential in the second quarter, the JV Raiders broke the game open to take a 35-18 lead at halftime.
That 19-4 run in the second paved the way for another 19-point quarter in the third. Leading 54-31 at the start of the fourth, Richmond added its final dozen points.
Hairston Jr. again led the team in scoring, netting 14 points, including 12 points in the second half. Legrand had a big game with 12 points, netting a team-high six points in the pivotal second quarter.
Peterkin also reached double-digits, evenly spreading his 11 points across all four quarters. Littlejohn ended with eight points, scoring six points in the final stanza.
Rounding out the 11-player scoring effort were Hinson (five points), sophomore Amare Bell (four points), Brewington and sophomore Jayden Ratliff (three points each), and Haynes, Pore and sophomore Makai King (two points each).
The JV Raiders will return to action Monday at home against Southern Lee High School. The game will start at 4:30 p.m.
