ROCKINGHAM — Opening its season at home on Tuesday, the Richmond Senior High School junior varsity boys’ basketball team came up short.
Despite holding a lead heading into the fourth quarter, the JV Raiders lost to Northern Guilford 51-45.
Third-year head coach Kenta Hutchinson noted his team “couldn’t finish” down the stretch against a “really good” JV Nighthawks team.
Leading 37-34 to start the final period, the JV Raiders were outscored 17-8.
Freshman Raymond Knotts led Richmond with 13 points, netting 11 of them in the third quarter. He had two three-pointers, two buckets and a free throw in the third.
Fellow freshman Ahaiver McDonald also hit double figures in the win, contributing 10 points. McDonald had four points in the opening stanza before adding one triple in the third and fourth quarters.
Freshman Keyonta Davis notched 7 points in the loss, scoring all of his points in the second quarter to help Richmond stay within a point, 18-17, at the break.
Sophomore Jada Zimmerman chipped in 6 points in the loss.
Richmond (0-1) will have another home game on Tuesday against non-conference Uwharrie Charter Academy. Tip off is set for around 6 p.m., following the JV girls’ game.
