JV Raiders pull away late at Scotland

LAURINBURG — On the road Friday, the Richmond Senior High School junior varsity boys’ basketball team stayed in the win column. 

Winning its second game in as many tries since returning to play this month, the JV Raiders defeated Scotland High School 50-42.

Using higher scoring performances in the second and fourth quarters to edge the JV Scots, Richmond was led in scoring by freshman Kerick Hairston Jr., who finished with 17 points. 

Also reaching double-figures in the Sandhills Athletic Conference game was sophomore Josiah Brewington (11 points). The JV Raiders’ third leading scorer was fellow sophomore Elijah Peterkin (9 points).

Rounding out the scoring effort were sophomores Adrion Pore (6 points), BJ Hinson (3 points) and Landon Legrand and Jacques Jackson (2 points each). 

Scotland pulled out to an 11-9 lead in the first quarter. Brewington had all five of his first-half points on two buckets and a free throw. 

Hairston Jr. got on the board with a field goal and Jackson scored his two points in the game. 

A 14-10 run in the second quarter by Richmond gave the JV Raiders a 23-21 lead at the break. 

Hairston Jr. brought his first-half total to eight points thanks to two baskets and a pair of free throws. 

Peterkin netted his first four points on two baskets and Hinson and Pore also found the cylinder one time each. 

Both teams scored 11 points in the third stanza, which gave Richmond a 34-32 lead. Brewington capped his scoring with a trio of field goals for six points. 

Scoring the team’s only three-pointer in the game was Hairston Jr., which was added to by Legrand’s two points. 

Richmond opened its two-point lead to eight points before the final buzzer. Helping distance the team in the final stretch was a 16-10 run. 

Two field goals and two free throws from Hairston Jr. gave him his final six points. Peterkin recorded his last five points with two baskets and one shot from the line. 

Pore scored four points (field goal, two free throws) and Hinson added a free throw. 

The JV Raiders (3-6, 2-2 SAC) will play at non-conference Pine Forest High School Thursday at 5:15 p.m.
