Ka'mora Watkins: The Official Richmond County Female Student-Athlete of the Week

ROCKINGHAM — Despite a shortened season, junior long jumper Ka’mora Watkins made her mark known over the weekend.

Representing Richmond Senior High School in the Sandhills Athletic Conference championship, Watkins competed in four events and brought home one conference crown, naming her the Official Richmond County Female Student-Athlete of the Week.

Setting two new personal records, this is Watkins’ third career selection. She earned it twice during her sophomore year for indoor and outdoor track and field.

CLASSROOM CREDITS WITH KA’MORA WATKINS

A year-round student-athlete, Watkins not only puts serious work in on the track, but also in the classroom. She’s a dual enrollment student who takes classes at Richmond and Richmond Community College.

During the fall semester, Watkins took two courses at RichmondCC and two classes at the high school. She passed all of them, earning As in AP US Government, English III Honors and Psychology 150.

This spring, Watkins is taking two additional courses at the college — English 111 and Spanish 112. She’s also enrolled in Chemistry Honors and Math 3 Honors at Richmond. At the start of the new semester, Watkins had a 3.69 weighted grade point average. 

A member of several clubs at Richmond, Watkins is in the African-American History Club and National Beta Club. 

When she graduates high school in 2026, Watkins hopes to earn a scholarship to compete in track and field in college. She also wants to pursue a career in the medical field as a nurse or a pediatrician.

“CONFERENCE CHAMP” WITH KA’MORA WATKINS

At the SAC championship meet in Winston-Salem, Watkins competed in three jumping events and one running event — the long jump, high jump, triple jump and 55-meter dash.

Placing in the top five of all four events, Watkins brought home the conference title in the long jump. She launched out to a new personal record distance of 15 feet, 10 inches, defeating runner-up Emmanuelle Whitehead of Lee County High School by half an inch.

Earning a pair of fourth-place finishes, Watkins did so in the high jump and triple jump. She cleared the bar at 4  feet, 6 inches in the high jump and recorded a final distance of 32 feet, 7.5 inches in the triple jump.

In her final event, the 55-meter dash, Watkins recorded a new personal record time of 7.84 seconds. That mark was good enough for a fifth-place finish.

Getting one more chance to try and qualify for the state championship meet later this month, Watkins will compete in a meet at Pinecrest High School Saturday.
