“HEADED TO STATES” WITH KATIE WAY During the SAC championship meet, the Lady Raiders entered as the No. 2 seed and finished third overall. Receiving a first-round bye, Richmond faced Hoke County and then Union Pines high schools. Falling to Hoke County 2-1 in the semifinal match, Way bowled a pair of strikes and closed two of her six frames across the three games. She followed that with a 4-for-6 performance as part of a 2-1 win over Union Pines to secure the team’s berth in the state championship tournament. Way rolled one strike and three spares, finishing the team tournament with a .500 combined closing percentage. In the individual tournament, which saw bowlers play three full games, Way recorded a final pin count of 454. Game scores of 150, 161 and 143 landed her in fifth place, naming her to the All-SAC team. The top-10 finish also penciled her into the individual state championship, as Way will be joined by junior teammate Ava Thompson, who took 10th. This season, Way has bowled 25 strikes and 28 spares in 15 regular-season matches and the SAC team championship (not counting the individual tournament). She has closed 53-of-116 frames for a .457 closing percentage. The state championship meet will be held Friday in Aberdeen and start at 10 a.m. RAPID RESPONSE VIDEO WITH KATIE WAY The Richmond Observer will publish its Official Richmond County Male Student-Athlete of the Week soon.
