“ON THE MAT”  WITH K’MAURI MORGAN

Joining the wrestling team after the football team made it three rounds in the state playoffs, Morgan has been on a tear to start his senior season.

Still undefeated, Morgan racked up seven wins in seven chances during the Raiders’ two meets last week. He had four technical falls, along with a pinfall, a decision and a forfeit.

At the Cat Fight Duals held at Anson High School, Morgan went 5-0. He followed that with a 2-0 night at Hoke County High School last Wednesday during Richmond’s Sandhills Athletic Conference opener.

Facing five opponents from five different schools in the 215-pound weight class, Morgan collected two tech falls, a pin, a decision and a forfeit at Anson. His pinfall was against Tilandis Carr (Anson).

In his closest match of the day, Morgan edged Jack Moran 9-2 in a decision that added three points to a 39-24 team victory over Butler High School. He had a forfeit win against Marvin Ridge High School.

Morgan ended two matches early by running up the score against his North Rowan and Olympic opponents. Both of his technical falls were by 17-2 scores over Charles Coleman (North Rowan) and Jeremiah Perez (Olympic).

Richmond began conference action a few days later at Hoke County, facing Lee County and Pinecrest high schools. The Raiders started with a loss to Pinecrest but rallied to defeat Lee County.

Morgan, along with teammate Hayden Smith, were the only two wrestlers to go 2-0 at the event. Again, both of Morgan’s victories were quick as he added five points both times with tech falls.

Leading 16-4 after the first period against Harrison Coleman of Pinecrest, Morgan won the bout 20-4 with 55 seconds left in the second.

With the Raiders well ahead in their match with Lee County, Morgan defeated Matthew Thomas 22-5 as time ran out in the first round.

Richmond has its first of two home meets this season Wednesday at Richmond County Ninth Grade Academy. Matches will start at 5 p.m.
