WINSTON-SALEM — Opening its season Tuesday, the Richmond Senior High School girls’ indoor track and field team placed in the top third of a field of a dozen teams.
Competing at the JDL Fast Track, the Lady Raiders earned fourth place with 52 points in the South Iredell Invitational.
Finishing ahead of Richmond were Piedmont (90 points), South Iredell (78.5 points) and Davie County (70.5 points) high schools.
The Lady Raiders had seven top-five finishes in six different events to rack up their points.
Senior Ka’mora Watkins earned the team’s lone first-place finish, while freshman Shamia Williams tied for first in one event.
Watkins, returning for her senior season, won the triple jump with a total distance of 34’-11”. Cruising past her opponents, Watkins was well ahead of second-place finisher Carrington Pitcher of Davie County, who finished at 28’-3”.
Williams, a newcomer this winter, tied for first in the long jump event in her high school debut. She launched to a distance of 15’-7”, which matched her with Kaela Tyson (Piedmont).
Also competing in the long jump, Watkins added points with a fourth-place distance of 14’-5”.
Richmond’s other two top-three results came in the 4x200-meter relay race and the shot put.
Running for the Lady Raiders in the 4x200, Angelina Culbreth, Chrislynn Culley, Colbie Covington and Nahryah Covington clocked in at 1:52.74 for second place. They trailed only Piedmont (1:50.53).
Taking third in the shot put was junior Glenisha Thomas. She threw her longest attempt to 30’-7”, which was a foot off the second-place mark.
Two other relay teams — the 4x400-meter and 4x800-meter squads — closed out the meet with top-five finishes.
The 4x800 team placed fourth overall with a final time of 12:15.89. Running in that race were Emely Valencia, Jazlyn Garcia, Janet Morales and Karen Hernandez.
In the 4x400 race, Kelli Gomez, Brittney Quick, Blair Miller and Jonahlise Terry clocked in at 5:14.80.
The Lady Raiders will run in their second meet of the season on Dec. 8. The Pine Lake Preparatory Invitational will also be held at the JDL Fast Track and start at 4:30 p.m.
