Lady Raider indoor track and field team prepares for NCHSAA state championship

CAMERON — The Richmond Senior High School girls’ indoor track and field team competed in 10 events at the Last Chance Meet at Union Pines last Wednesday.

A tune up to the upcoming NCHSAA state championship meet, the Lady Raiders raced against seven other teams from around the region in the meet hosted by Pinecrest High School.

Richmond took first place in two events — the 4x200-meter relay team and the triple jump. The relay team finished the race in 1:50.01 and senior Janiya Blue won the triple jump with a distance of 31 feet, 0 inches.

The Lady Raiders also had four second-place finishers at the meet. 

Junior Andrea Ellerbe took second in the 300-meter dash (43.10 seconds), sophomore Aniyah Tanksley was second in the 55-meter hurdles (10.83 seconds), Blue was the runner-up in the long jump (14 feet, 7 inches) and junior Honesty Horne threw the shot put 26 feet, 8 inches.

Earning the team’s best time in the 55-meter dash was junior Isis Covington, who raced to a third-place finish of 7.68 seconds. Just behind her in fourth place was fellow junior Akeya Harrison (7.83 seconds). Junior Jay’da Williams took seventh with a mark of 8.13 seconds.

Also competing in the 300-meter dash was Harrison (8th, 47.94 seconds), senior Talayeh Covington (11th, 48.80 seconds) and Isis Covington (14th, 49.73 seconds).

Running in the distance events were junior Michala Nechvilova and freshman Ella Munn. Nechvilova placed 11th in the 500-meter race (1:41.08) and Munn took 8th place in the 1000-meter run (4:28.05).

Following Tanksley’s second-place finish in the 55-meter hurdles, Williams was third with a time of 10.91 seconds. Rounding out the team’s efforts were Nechvilova (5th, 11.33 seconds) and freshman Fallon Little (8th, 11.72 seconds).

Tanksley was the only Lady Raider to place in the high jump, taking fifth overall with a mark of 4 feet, 4 inches. She also took seventh in the long jump (12 feet, 5 inches) and Williams finished third (14 feet, 6 inches).

Three other competitors threw in the shot put, with senior Rayana Shubert placing third overall with a distance of 26 feet, 5 inches. Behind her were junior Rachel Martin (5th, 25 feet, 3 inches) and sophomore Jasmine Jennings (6th, 24 feet, 11.5 inches).

Richmond will now prepare for the state championship meet, which will be held on Friday and Saturday.
