Lady Raider volleyball camp returns for 5th summer

ROCKINGHAM — Just a few weeks away, Richmond Senior High School’s annual volleyball camp will return for its fifth straight summer.

Head coach Ashleigh Larsen, who will be entering her seventh season this fall, released details of the three-day camp Monday.

This summer’s camp is set for June 17-19 and will be held from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. each day in Richmond’s gymnasium.

Last June, a total of 60 campers attended. However, due to limited gym space, this year’s camp will only be offered for rising first to fifth graders.

“We have had a lot of success with our camp the last four years and it’s great to see so much interest,” Larsen said. “Unfortunately, we had to drop the middle school grades this year in order to accommodate camp.

“Our skills clinics this spring saw a lot of participation and that was a good time for middle school players to develop. Hopefully in the future we’ll be able to return to our usual numbers.”

Aside from the desire to improve their volleyball skills, campers will need to bring sneakers and their own drinks. The cost per camper is $55. Families with more than one camper are asked to contact Larsen about pricing.

Campers must be registered before June 12 to be guaranteed a camp t-shirt. Late sign-ups will be held on the first day of camp and cost $65 per camper.

Larsen shared the camp’s mission is to “teach, educate and raise the level of volleyball skills for the campers, as well as teach the team concept. This will lead to success on the volleyball court.”

She also encouraged local youth to “keep active this summer by being a part of a winning tradition.”

Helping Larsen at camp will be junior varsity head coach Melissa Dennis, along with current varsity and junior varsity players. There is the possibility of former Lady Raider and former/current college volleyball players helping, too.

Over the three-day camp, participants will work on the sport’s fundamentals. Passing, serving and hitting drills will be combined with other small-sided games and scrimmages.

“We’re excited for another successful summer camp,” Larsen closed. “It’s alway a great thing to see these girls wear their camp shirts to volleyball matches during our season. We hope to keep up the tradition and continue building our program for the future.”
