Lady Raiders 3rd in first MSC meet of season

Ray, 4x200 relay team earn 1st-place finishes

SOUTHERN PINES — Competing in its first Mid-South Conference meet of the season Wednesday, the Richmond Senior High School girls’ track and field team placed third.

One of three teams competing at Pinecrest High School, the Lady Raiders recorded 129 points across 18 scored events.

The host Lady Patriots won the meet with 279 points, followed by second-place Pine Forest High School (147 points).

Richmond had two first-place results for 20 combined points. The team had five second-place performances, and four finishes each in third, fourth and fifth places.

One of the first-place wins was by sophomore Zarriannah Ray in the shot put, while the 4x200-meter relay team won its race.

Ray’s best throw landed at 34 feet, 3.5 inches, and the 4x2 relay team made its circuit around the track in 1:48.10.

The Lady Raiders had two sprinting events end in second place – freshman Nahryah Covington in the 100-meter dash (13.37 seconds) and junior Angelina Culbreth in the 200-meter dash (27.98 seconds).

Richmond’s 4x800-meter relay team was also second (11:50.10). The other two second-place distances were in the long jump and triple jump. Freshman Shamia Williams landed at 15 feet, 9 inches in the long jump, and junior Armoni Walden had a mark of 30 feet, 11 inches in the triple jump.

Covington (28.03 seconds) and Culbreth (1:04.46) also recorded one third-place time apiece in the 200-meter dash and 400-meter dash, respectively.

Also taking third place were senior Jasiah Gilchrist in the 100-meter race (13.59 seconds) and junior Glenisha Thomas in the shot put (31 feet, 7 inches).

Walden notched a fourth-place distance of 14 feet, 3.5 inches in the long jump. The team’s only fourth-place time on the track was from freshman Emoni Covington in the 200-meter dash (28.24 seconds).

Senior Emma Williams (72 feet, 6 inches) and freshman Natelie Everett (28 feet, 0 inches) each placed fourth overall in the discus and triple jump, respectively.

Rounding out the Lady Raiders’ top-five finishes were Emoni Covington in the 100-meter dash (13.62 seconds); Gilchrist in the 200-meter race (28.31 seconds); senior Kymaria Wall in the 400-meter dash (1:05.09); and junior Emely Valencia in the 800-meter run (2:51.89).

The Lady Raiders’ next meet will be Saturday in the Cummings High School Invitational. Events will get started at 9 a.m.
