ROCKINGHAM — Facing the leader of the Mid-South Conference Thursday, the Richmond Senior High School girls’ soccer team couldn’t shake up the standings.
Closing the first of two rounds of regular season action against MSC teams, the Lady Raiders fell to Pinecrest High School 5-0
Richmond kept it close in the first half, limiting the Lady Patriots (11-0-2, 5-0 MSC) to just one goal.
The final 40 minutes resulted in four more goals for Pinecrest.
With a younger team this season, head coach Chris Larsen said Thursday’s match still yielded positive results for the Lady Raiders.
“Playing Pinecrest is always tough and we know what to expect,” Larsen said. “I thought the girls played an exceptional first half against a quality opponent. We just ran out of steam in the second half, but the girls never hung their heads. Tonight was about fighting through our learning curve.
“I’m never one to look too closely at the win-loss column,” he added. “My focus is that we’re getting better as a team night in and night out. There were a lot of positives tonight, and even though the score doesn’t show them, we are a stronger team moving into the second half of the season.”
With a two-week hiatus between games, the Lady Raiders (3-8-2, 0-4-1 MSC) will begin the second round of regular season conference play after spring break.
Their next game is scheduled for April 17 at Pine Forest High School.
JV Lady also lose at Pinecrest
Ahead of Thursday’s varsity game, Richmond’s junior varsity girls’ soccer team also came up short.
Kept scoreless, too, the JV Lady Raiders lost 3-0 to Pinecrest.
The JV Lady Raiders (5-4, 3-2 MSC) have off until April 17. They’ll travel to Pine Forest for a conference match.
