ROCKINGHAM — Getting back in the win column Tuesday, the Richmond Senior High School girls’ tennis team avenged a loss from earlier this month.

Beginning a busy three-match week, the Lady Raiders defeated Overhills High School 6-3 on their home court.

Richmond secured four victories during singles play, and added a pair of doubles wins to even the season series with its Mid-South Conference opponent.

“The girls played awesome today,” head coach Jessica Covington said. “We really felt like we shouldn’t have lost the first match against Overhills, so coming out today, the girls were determined to split the series.

“Our lineup has changed around a little bit this week, and all the girls seemed to adjust to their new spots. This was a good win to get some momentum going into our other two matches this week.”

Earning wins in singles play were No. 3 senior Jentry Denson, No. 4 sophomore Sydney Barnes, No. 5 sophomore Erin Drumwright and No. 6 junior Angelina Culbreth.

Falling short in the No. 1 and No. 2 matches were junior Colbie Covington and freshman Molly Covingotn, respectively.

Playing the best of three sets, Denson got the winning started with a 6-2, 6-1 dashing of Zoe Beere. On the next court over, Barnes defeated Isabella Finnie 6-4, 6-2.

In her match against Tristan LaDelle, Drumwright took the first set 6-3 and swept the match with 6-1 tally in the second set. Closing out the singles victories with the largest margin of victory was Culbreth, who quieted Kira Smoyer 6-1, 6-1.

Colbie Covington lost 3-6, 0-6 to Melody Chung, while Molly Covington came up just short 6-4, 5-7, 6-10 in a tiebreaker with Victoria Finnie.

Needing just one win in doubles to ice the team victory, Richmond’s No. 2 and No. 3 pairings both won.

In the No. 2 match, Denson and Barnes defeated Beere and Isabella Finnie 8-6. Drumwright and Culbreth added the insurance win in the No. 3 matchup, winning 8-5 over LaDelle and Smoyer.

The Covington sisters, playing doubles for the first time together, lost 3-8 to Chung and Victoria Finnie.
