ROCKINGHAM — Closing its regular-season schedule with a win over rival Scotland High School on Thursday, the Lady Raider tennis team also celebrated four players on Senior Night.
Ahead of their 5-2 victory over Scotland, the Lady Raiders recognized seniors Paris Almon, Kirsten McDonald, Jenna McRae and Mariah Waddell.
“I’m so thankful for a wonderful season with our seniors,” head coach Jessica Covington said. “They are leaders on and off the court. We are going to miss them very much next year.”
Richmond took four of the six singles matches and earned a forfeit win in the No. 3 doubles match leading 5-0.
Covington explained the top two doubles matches were not played because of rain and court conditions.
Playing the best of three sets, No. 1 Almon and No. 2 sophomore Neely Turner each lost their respective singles matches. Almon fell to Laura Wlodarczak 3-6, 2-6 and Turner dropped her match 3-6, 2-6 against Olivia Aiken.
No. 3 junior Addison Massey defeated Morgan Stewart 6-1, 6-1, which was followed by another win by No. 4 McDonald, who beat Samantha Collard 6-3, 6-0.
Capping the singles wins for the Lady Raiders were No. 5 junior Maren Carter and No. 6 freshman Hanna Smith. Carter took down Maegan Gunnels 6-1, 6-3 and Smith cruised past Cora Clemmons 6-0, 6-0.
Waddell and Smith took a 5-0 lead over Gunnels and Clemmons in the No. 3 doubles match before Scotland forfeited the match. The No. 1 pairing of Almon and Turner and No. 2 team of Massey and McDonald didn’t get to play.
Richmond (4-8) will open the first round of the Sandhills Athletic Conference tournament next Tuesday against an opponent that has yet to be nam.
“We are looking forward to the conference tournament on Tuesday,” Covington closed.
