WAXHAW — Opening its season over the weekend, a small group of student-athletes for the Richmond Senior High School girls’ track and field team performed well.
Traveling to Cuthbertson High School for the Clash of the Carolinas invitational, the Lady Raiders had five top-20 finishes.
As a team, Richmond and head coach Reggie Miller collected four total points and tied with Sun Valley High School for 28th place. There were 32 qualifying teams at the meet.
Earning all four of the Lady Raiders’ points was freshman long jumper Shamia Williams. She placed fifth overall in the event, the best finish for Richmond at the meet, with a final distance of 16 feet, 3.25 inches.
The Lady Raiders’ 4x200-meter relay team had the next best finish for Richmond, which was 11th overall with a time of 1:49.56. Competing in that event were Williams, freshmen Emoni Covington and Nahryah Covington, along with junior Angelina Culbreth.
Senior field competitor Ka’mora Watkins was next on the stat sheet in the long jump and triple jump. Her best finish was 13th overall in the triple jump (32 feet, 0 inches), followed by a 14th-place distance of 15 feet, 2.75 inches in the long jump.
Concluding the Lady Raiders’ top-20 finishers was junior Glenisha Thomas in the shot put. Her best throw of the meet landed at 29 feet, 9 inches, which placed 16th overall.

The Lady Raiders will get ready for their first Mid-South Conference meet of the season against Jack Britt and Overhills high schools March 18. The meet will be held at Reid Ross Classical School and start at 4:30 p.m.
