CAMERON — Facing a tough, yet familiar non-conference opponent Monday, the Richmond Senior High School girls’ tennis team still couldn’t get in the win column.

Playing in their second of three consecutive non-conference matches to start the season, the Lady Raiders suffered a 9-0 loss at Union Pines High School.

“I thought we played okay today,” head coach Jessica Covington shared. “Union Pines was the better, more experienced team and we knew that going in.

“The good thing for us is that we are learning and growing each match. There were a lot of improvements today from our first match and I’m proud of the girls for doing that.”

Richmond’s best outing Monday came from No. 2 junior Colbie Covington, who fell 3-8 to Lucy McPherson.

No. 6 sophomore Erin Drumwright managed to score multiple points against Emma Chapin, but lost 2-8.

No. 1 senior Jentry Denson and No. 4 sophomore Sydney Barnes each lost by scores of 1-8 to Lynn Yoxtheimer and Bella Edwards, respectively.

Suffering shutout losses were No. 3 freshman Molly Covington and No. 5 junior Angelia Culbreth.

In doubles play, Richmond dropped the trio of matches by scores of 0-8, 3-8 and 0-8.

The Lady Raiders (0-2) will take part in rivalry week Tuesday when they host non-conference Scotland High School. Singles matches will start at 4 p.m.
