LUMBERTON — The start of a three-game final week of the regular season didn’t go in favor of the Richmond Senior High School softball team Monday.

A quiet night at the plate resulted in a 13-0 loss in five innings at Lumberton High School.

With the defeat, the Lady Raiders weren’t able to even their non-conference series with the Lady Pirates.

Lumberton took a 3-0 lead after the first inning and scored seven runs in the third frame to make it a 10-run advantage. The Lady Pirates scored their final three runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Richmond used a pair of sophomore pitchers in the game, starting with Mackenzie Quick. In her two innings, Quick allowed eight runs (seven earned) on seven hits.

Madison Hancock took over in relief and also pitched two innings. Three of her five runs allowed were earned on four hits with one strikeout.

Richmond totaled just three hits in the loss, all of which were singles. Connecting for a base hit were Hancock, sophomore Lexi Smith and freshman Claire Clark.

No other batters reached base for Richmond, as Lumberton’s pitching and defense didn’t allow a base on balls or commit an error.

The Lady Raiders (7-13, 5-3 MSC) will start their final two-game Mid-South Conference series of the regular season Tuesday. They’ll travel to Pinecrest High School (8-10, 2-6 MSC) and start at 6:30 p.m.

JV Lady Raiders stay on hot streak

For the fifth time this season, and the second time in as many games, the JV Lady Raider softball team scored more than 20 runs Monday.

Dismantling Lumberton to complete the season sweep, Richmond earned a 25-0 win in three innings (mercy rule). The victory extended the team’s winning streak to a baker’s dozen.

The JV Lady Raiders scored two runs in the first inning, broke the game open with a 14-run second inning and ended the third with nine more runs.

Facing just nine batters, freshman pitcher Grace Hill didn’t allow a hit in her three innings of work. Her lone base runner reached on an error and she struck out one batter.

Leading the team at the plate, freshman Haylee McCaskill went 4-for-5 with an inside-the-park homer, a double and two singles. She recorded a game-high six runs batted in.

Each connecting for one hit were sophomore Annabelle Millen (double) and freshman Makenzie Mabe (triple). Both players added three RBI apiece.

Freshman Lyra Newton hit a triple and had two RBI, and sophomore Liz Lunceford also had two RBI on a base hit.

Hill helped herself out with a pair of singles and one RBI. Sophomores Jordyn Chappell and Abby Hinson each had one hit and one RBI. Bringing in a run apiece were freshmen Autumn Cooper and Ava Parks.

The JV Lady Raiders (14-1, 8-0 MSC) will also play at Pinecrest Tuesday and start at 4:30 p.m.
