BURLINGTON — Over the weekend, the Richmond Senior High School girls’ track and field team placed in the top half of the field at an invitational meet.
Richmond and head coach Reggie Miller competed in the Cummings High School Invitational and placed eighth overall out of 17 qualifying teams.
The Lady Raiders racked up 26 points across six events, while competing in 15 total events.
Corvian Community School won the invitational with 65 points, a small margin of victory over Hillside and Jordan high schools, which tied for second place with 61 points.
The Lady Raiders were the only Mid-South Conference team to participate in the meet.
Leading the way with 14 combined points were two Lady Raiders in the shot put. Sophomore Zarriannah Ray placed second overall with a throw of 32 feet, 4.75 inches (eight points) and junior Glenisha Thomas recorded a distance of 31 feet, 1.5 inches for third place (six points).
Picking up another bulk of the team’s scoring were three relay teams, which combined for nine more points.
Two of those teams were the 4x400-meter and 4x800-meter relay teams, which each placed fourth overall in their respective race. The 4x4 team clocked in at 4:36.34 and the 4x8 squad ran its race in 12:36.50.
The Lady Raiders’ 4x100-meter relay team added a point with a sixth-place time of 52.91 seconds.
Richmond’s final three points came from two Lady Raiders in a pair of field events – seniors Ka’mora Watkins and Emma Williams.
Picking up two points in the triple jump was Watkins, who landed at 32 feet, 5.5 inches, putting her in fifth place. Williams set a new personal record in the discus with a mark of 79 feet, 9 inches, was sixth overall for one point.
The Lady Raiders will return to Mid-South Conference competition Thursday with a conference meet at Overhills High School. Events will start at 4 p.m.
