ASHEBORO — The Richmond Senior High School girls’ soccer team was kept out of the net Friday.
Continuing a tough stretch of non-conference matches to start the season, the Lady Raiders were shut out on the road at Asheboro High School.
The Lady Blue Comets defeated Richmond by a final score of 5-0.
Asheboro netted its first two goals in the closing four minutes of the first half to take a two-goal lead.
Similarly in the second half, the Lady Blue Comets used the final 13 minutes of the match to add their final three tallies.
“This was a tough one tonight,” head coach Chris Larsen said. “We played some good soccer but had lapses when we let them score. We just couldn’t get our offense going in the right direction against a pretty strong back line.
“Again, like I’ve told the girls, these matches are growing us as a team,” he added. “We may not be getting the wins, but we are figuring things out that we need to for conference play. We’re still very young, but there are improvements being made.”
Following the weekend, the Lady Raiders (2-4-1) will look to get back in the win column when they host non-conference Forest Hills High School (0-4-1) Monday at 7 p.m.
JV Lady Raiders return from hiatus with win
Playing its first match in a week, the Richmond junior varsity girls’ soccer team also played at Asheboro Friday.
The JV Lady Raiders defeated the JV Lady Blue Comets 3-1.
Richmond took a 1-0 lead at halftime thanks to a goal scored by sophomore Isabella Chavez, who headed in the goal off a corner kick by sophomore Matti Wallace.
Wallace added to her night when she scored Richmond’s second goal of the match to start the second half. She sent a shot from 25 yards over the keeper’s hands.
Scoring the team’s final goal was freshman Miley Locklear, who redirected a shot into the net from close range.
“I thought we played pretty well for having a week off between matches,” head coach Bennie Howard said. “Hayden Chappell played really well in the goal tonight for us and that gave us the opportunity to score goals.
“Hayden had nine saves and it was the best performance she’s had for us this season,” he added. “It was a good team win heading into next week.”
The JV Lady Raiders (3-0) will also host Forest Hills Monday, starting at 5:15 p.m.
