CAMERON — Another strong performance by the Richmond Senior High School girls’ indoor track and field team took place over the weekend.
Tuning up for their conference championship later this week, the Lady Raiders participated in the Viking Polar Bear Invitational hosted by Union Pines High School Saturday.
While no team scores were kept, the Lady Raiders found success in several events, including three first-place finishes. They also ended the meet with a total of nine top-five results.
The three victories were earned by senior Ka’mora Watkins and junior Glenisha Thomas, as well as the 4x200-meter relay team.
Watkins and Thomas won the high jump and shot put, respectively, for the second straight meet. Clearing the bar at 4 feet, 10 inches was Watkins, while Thomas landed her longest throw at 30 feet, 6 inches.
The team’s 4x200 relay squad, which placed second last weekend at Pinecrest High School, finished atop the time sheet this time around with a time of 1:51.14.
Four of the Lady Raiders’ remaining six top-five finishes came in field events, an area that they’ve seen a lot of success in this season.
Watkins, who swept the three jumping events at Pinecrest, was second in the triple jump (35 feet, 11 inches) and fourth in the long jump (16 feet, 5 inches).
Freshman Shamia Williams collected a second-place mark of 17 feet, 0 inches in the long jump, and placed third in the triple jump (32 feet, 8 inches).
Also a sprinter, Williams rounded out her top-fives with a fifth-place time of 7.79 seconds in the 55-meter dash.
The team’s other top-five placer was freshman Nahryah Covington in the 300-meter dash. She finished the race in 44.37 seconds, good for fourth place.
The Lady Raiders will compete in the Mid-South Conference championship meet Friday. It will be held at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem and begin at 4:30 p.m.
