Lady Wildcats spear Lady Spartans for fourth-straight win; Ellerbe boys edged by Spring Hill

SPRING HILL, N.C. — The Ellerbe Middle School girls’ basketball team, coached by Derek Anderson, has started to put together a pretty impressive resume for the 2018-19 season.

On the road Wednesday at Spring Hill Middle School, the Lady Wildcats rolled to their fourth-straight win, defeating the Lady Spartans 45-29.

Using a 13-point effort by eighth grader Nyla Stroman, the team’s leading scorer, Ellerbe improved to 5-2 on the season, and 4-2 in Southeastern Middle School Athletic Conference play.

Stroman also led the way in the Lady Wildcats’ previous game, a 29-3 thrashing, against Anson Middle School last week. Having her best game of the season Wednesday for Ellerbe was fellow eighth grader Chloe Nunn. She netted a season-high 12 points to follow up Stroman’s performance.

No other player for the visiting team would find double-digits, but Curtia Crump and Layla Hayden each added six points apiece. Rounding out the scoring for Anderson’s team were Rebeca Avalos (4 points) and Lakeshia Little (2 points).

The other two points for Ellerbe came when Spring Hill scored a field goal in the wrong basket.

Anderson and company are back in action Thursday, facing off against in-county rival Cordova Middle School.

Ellerbe boys fall to Spartans

Looking to complete Ellerbe’s third sweep of its opponents this season, the Wildcat basketball team came up just short to Spring Hill. The Spartans edged the visiting Wildcats 51-42.

But Ellerbe’s performance wasn’t without another strong outing by eighth grader Emoni McBride. The point guard dropped 26 points Wednesday, making it the third game in a row he scored at least 26 points.

Against Anson he netted 27 points, and had a career day against Christ the Cornerstone Academy two weeks ago with a 37-point performance.

Freddie Hill notched 11 points in the loss, a new season-high for him. Eighth grader Jh’kwon Covington tallied six points.

On the season, Tommy Shelton’s Wildcats are 2-5 overall, with a 1-5 mark in SEMSAC play. The Wildcats are on the hardwood Thursday with a meeting with rival Cordova.
