'Learning experience' for Lady Raiders in loss

Richmond suffers 3-0 loss to Lee County

ROCKINGHAM — Starting a three-match week Tuesday, the Richmond Senior High School girls’ soccer team couldn’t find the back of the net.

Seeing their season-long skid reach three games, the Lady Raiders also suffered their third consecutive shutout loss.

Hosting Lee County High School for a Sandhills Athletic Conference match, Richmond was blanked 3-0.

Lee County (4-3, 2-2 SAC) scored two first-half goals in the 29th and 33rd minutes, before tallying its final goal early in the second half.

Despite the shutout, head coach Chris Larsen called the match a learning experience for the Lady Raiders.

“I can see where we are learning and getting better,” Larsen commented. “Our execution and decision making isn’t always perfect, which goes with the learning experience, but the girls are continuing to grow and get better.

“It’s not that the girls are making poor decisions, it’s that there is often a simpler play with the ball that will create more space and scoring chances. Our M.O. is still trying to figure out how to put the ball in the back of the net.

“The goal early in the second half was the icing on the cake,” he closed. “We know we can defend well, but it’s hard to defend for 80 minutes without making a mistake. And that’s where we need to counter it with being able to score.”

The Lady Raiders (2-6, 1-3 SAC) play their second of three matches this week Thursday at home against non-conference Porter Ridge High School (5-3-2). The start time is 6 p.m.

Sports editor’s note: The Richmond junior varsity girls’ soccer team didn’t play Tuesday.
