LAURINBURG — Part of a complete sweep by Richmond Senior High School Friday, the junior varsity girls’ basketball team picked up its first win of the new year.
The first of four wins by Richmond’s varsity and junior varsity basketball teams over Scotland High School, the JV Lady Raiders defeated the JV Lady Scots 50-24.
A strong first half put Richmond ahead by 18 points at halftime, before the team ran away with the game in the second half.
Freshman Mary Little scored a game-high 30 points, a new single-game career-high for her. She had 11 points in the first half and her final 19 points in the final two quarters.
Freshmen Alexis Moseley and Erin Drumwright scored seven and eight points, respectively. Also finding the basket were sophomore Audicy Rush and freshman Zamyria Smith (two points each) and sophomore Iyana Little (one point).
Richmond took a 12-2 lead after the first quarter. Mary Little and Drumwright each scored four points on a pair of field goals.
Moseley had her first three points on a free throw and a bucket, and Iyana Little connected on one attempt from the line.
A 13-5 run in the second stanza gave the JV Lady Raiders a 25-7 lead at halftime. Mary Little brought her scoring total to 11 points thanks to two baskets and a three-pointer.
Moseley finished her scoring with her final four points with two field goals. Drumwright helped cushion the lead with a basket to give her six points.
In the third quarter, Mary Little scored 12 of Richmond’s 14 points. She knocked down five baskets and two free throws. Rush’s two points on a field goal added to the team’s lead.
Closing out the final eight minutes of play, Mary Little netted her final seven points, effectively outscoring the entire Scotland team. She made three buckets and one free throw.
Adding to the rest of the 11-8 run in the quarter were Drumwright and Smith, both of whom made one basket.
The JV Lady Raiders (3-3, 2-2 SAC ) will next play at non-conference Pine Forest High School Thursday at 4 p.m.
