CORDOVA — With the regular season winding down, the Hamlet and Cordova middle school girls’ basketball met in Southeastern Middle School Athletic Conference action on Monday.
The visiting Hamlet Lady Red Rams took care of business against the Lady Cavs, 62-22.
Three Hamlet players would score double digits, with Ryelan Lyerly leading the way with a game-hgh 14 points. Behind her were Orena Drake with 12 points and 10 points from Saquanna Bostic.
Lyerly scored eight points in the first half, while Drake had six and Bostic added for before the break. All three would score six points respectively in the second half.
For Cordova, Yasmine McLaughlin led her team with 12 points, and Erin Fields knocked in a pair of triples for six points.
Hamlet head coach Mitch Coe noted how he was able to insert every player on the team into the game. Others to add points were Shadaisha Lindsey with eight points, while Elise Dimery and Jamia Crowder finished with six and four points.
Kimora Ingram also notched four points and rounding out the scoring were Olivia Brown and Kinsie Lyerly with a basket apiece.
“It was a total team effort with all the Lady Rams seeing significant minutes on the floor,” Coe said. “I’m so very proud of all our girls. I knew a few of the girls were starving for playing time and it’s tough coming to practice and working hard and not getting in the game.
“The girls have done a great job of knowing their roles and understanding that the first team is only as good as the second team makes the,” he added. “They’ve continued to work hard and when the opportunity presented itself today, they rose to the occasion.”
Hamlet improved to 6-2 on the year, while Cordova remained winless.
The Lady Red Rams will close the regular season on Thursday at home against Ellerbe Middle School (1-7), while Cordova will host East Hoke Middle School. Both games are set for 4 p.m.
