Major Boyce Faries Jr.

HAMLET — Major Boyce “M.B.” Faries Jr., 96, of Hamlet passed away peacefully Sunday, March 6, 2022, at his sister's home in Rockingham, surrounded by his loving family.

M.B. was born Nov. 3, 1925, in Lincolnton to the late Major Boyce Faries Sr. and Nora Williamson Faries.

After graduating from Hamlet High school in 1944, he joined the USMC to serve his country. 

A veteran of World War II, M.B. served in the U.S. Marine Corps 3rd Division, 9th Marines from 1944–1946. He was a survivor of the Battle of Iwo Jima, after spending 45 days on the island with no replacements. He also served at Japan, Chichi Jima, and Guam in the Pacific Theater. 

After the war, M.B. returned to Hamlet to work as a carman with the Seaboard Coastline railroad where he retired after 42 years of service. 

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his longtime, loving companion Betty Brigman; his sisters, Frances Faries McCaskill and Sarah Faries Lassiter; and brothers, Victor Hugo Faries Sr. and William Scott Faries.

He is survived by his sister, Becky Faries Williams of Rockingham; niece, Amy Williams, and nephew, Robert Williams of Rockingham; and many other loving family members near and far.

 A graveside service will be held Saturday, April 16, 2022 at Richmond Co. Memorial Park at 3 p.m. with CLP Belinda Rice officiating with military honors provided by the USMC.
