ROCKINGHAM — Police have charged a man who allegedly broke into apartments twice within a week to steal metal.
According to warrants issued to the Rockingham Police Department, 62-year-old Tommy McInnis broke into duplex apartments on Pickett Street on Oct. 17 and 20, stealing $2,400 worth of copper wiring.
McInnis reportedly caused damage to the buildings in the process.
He was arrested Oct. 24 and charged with two felony counts each of: injury to property to obtain nonferrous metals; breaking and entering; and larceny after breaking and entering.
McInnis was booked into the Richmond County Jail on a $20,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in court Nov. 6. His bond was posted Friday afternoon.
Online court records show McInnis has several pending traffic citations.
Records with the N.C. Department of Adult Correction show McInnis has is a convicted sex offender with a criminal history dating back more than 30 years.
Previous convictions, mostly in Scotland County include multiple counts of forgery, uttering a forged instrument, misdemeanor and felony larceny, obtaining property by false pretenses and injury to property.
He was also convicted on two counts of taking indecent liberties with a child in 1993 and trafficking a Schedule II controlled substance in 2004.
McInnis’ record has been clean since his parole ended in 2017.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
