ROCKINGHAM — Police have charged a homeless man with stealing equipment from a retail store.
According to an arrest warrant, 45-year-old Jody Singletary stole a Troy-Bilt 3300 PSI pressure washer from Walmart on July 1, using the emergency exit.
(Note: The warrant and court entry for this case list his name as “Jodie A. Singletary,” however jail and other court records list him as “Jody Neil Singletary. Also, the warrant lists Singletary as homeless, though prior records show an address in Laurel Hill.)
Singletary was arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit felony larceny and larceny from a merchant using an emergency door. Records with the Richmond County Jail show he is being held without bond, however court records show a $250,000 secured bond. He is scheduled to appear in court July 9.
Records appear to show his alleged co-conspirator has yet to be charged.
Court records show Singletary has the following pending charges from a 2023 case in Scotland County: breaking and entering; felony larceny; conspiring to break and enter a building to commit felony larceny; and first-degree trespassing.
Singletary also has several pending traffic violations in Richmond County.
Records with the N.C. Department of Adult Correction show Singletary has a criminal past dating back more than 25 years in Scotland County:
1999 - assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury; injury to personal property; communicating threats
2000 - obtaining property by false pretenses; misdemeanor breaking and entering; driving under the influence; driving while impaired; driving under the age of 21 after consuming a controlled substance
2009 - five counts of felony breaking and entering; four counts of larceny after breaking and entering
2016 - two counts of breaking and entering vehicles; felony breaking and entering;
2017 - felony breaking and entering; habitual breaking and entering; and attempted larceny over $1,000.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
