ROCKINGHAM — Police say a man stole a SUV then ran away from the investigating officer.

According to an arrest warrant, 38-year-old Kaslo Deon McKinnon, of Armstead Street, stole a 2010 Kia Sportage on May 30.

McKinnon is also accused of running from Detective Keeley Sutton, who was investigating a report of the stolen vehicle.

He was arrested and charged with one felony count each of larceny of a motor vehicle and possession of a stolen motor vehicle, as well as one misdemeanor count of resisting a public officer.

McKinnon was booked into the Richmond County Jail where he remains under a $15,000 secured bond for those charges. He had a court appearance scheduled for June 10 and his next is slated for Aug. 26.

Jail records show McKinnon is being held on a combined $12,000 secured bond for two counts of failure to appear on a misdemeanor, and a $5,000 secured bond for a misdemeanor out-of-county probation violation.

McKinnon is also being held on a $1,000 cash bond for child support.

Online court records show McKinnon has a June 17 court appearance on two traffic violations, including having no operator’s license.

Records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction show McKinnon is currently on probation after receiving a suspended sentence Oct. 29, 2020 for a Moore County conviction of willfully trespassing and damaging a school bus. He received a 12-month suspended sentence in that case.

McKinnon’s first conviction was in 2000 for possession of a weapon on campus, a felony. He was initially given probation, which was revoked in 2002 and landed him behind bars for three months of a minimum five-month sentence.

Less than a year following his release, McKinnon was convicted of assault on a female, and, four weeks after that, of misdemeanor breaking and entering.

In 2005, McKinnon was convicted of possession of a Schedule II controlled substance.

His probation was again revoked the following year.

While serving seven months on the drug charge, McKinnon was convicted of driving while impaired.

In 2008, McKinnon was convicted of driving with a revoked license and communicating threats and he served three months when his probation was revoked on the threat conviction.

McKinnon was again convicted of driving while impaired in 2010 and was incarcerated for four months in 2013 when his probation was revoked.

Records show McKinnon was also convicted of:

  • Felony selling a Schedule II controlled substance (2014), nearly 10-month incarceration
  • Misdemeanor hit and run (2016), probation
  • Two counts of driving with a revoked license (2018), probation

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
