"MATTer of Opinion" Sports Column: Practice Doesn't Always Make Perfect

Posted

BRACKET RACKET: There's a reason why Warren Buffet offers up a billion dollars to whoever can put together a perfect March Madness bracket. Because it doesn't happen. Ever.

I mean, besides the handful of UMBC students or alumni that picked the Retrievers to upset overall No. 1 seed Virginia, no one else got that right. And even those select few that were correct didn't have Loyola-Chicago beating Miami and Tennessee back to back or Buffalo upsetting Arizona.

Shoot, I had Arizona in my final four.

Which brings me to my point. You can make 1,000 brackets and never get the perfect one. The numbers and the odds just don't add up.

I consider myself pretty knowledgeable when it comes to college basketball and just sports in general. I watch games throughout the season, check stats, know who the players are on different teams, and yet three of my four final teams are at home. I picked Michigan State to get beat by Xavier in the championship. Both will be watching from their couches.

I even tried to think with my head instead of my heart because I really didn't think it was the Tar Heels' year again for the second season in a row. I also didn't think they'd lose to Texas A&M, however.

All the attention that I pay March Madness and yet, if you gather up some people that don't follow it, have them pick teams based on their favorite uniforms or whose mascot would win in a fight, they'd tend to do better than me.

I'm obviously no expert. Of course, I never claimed to be.

On this week's sports show, we're going to write up do-over brackets to make up for the sadness that is, at least, my bracket, and I currently have Kentucky facing Michigan and Villanova facing Duke with the blue bloods playing for rings.

I hate to say it, but hindsight being 20/20, I have the Blue Devils winning it all.

I'd love to have a billion dollars riding on it.
