Smith, Lindsey lead the Lady Rockets past Cordova

Rockingham’s Hannah Smith netted three goals in the opening 12 minutes for the Lady Rockets soccer team at Cordova Middle School on Tuesday.  The quick 3-0 lead set the tone for a 7-0 shutout victory in a game that was called at halftime.

Jamyia Lindsey also added three scores and Ella Gibson found the back of the net once to round out the scoring.  Karley Simmons recorded four assists for Rokingham in the win.

Baucom, Rockets take down Cavaliers

For the first 10 minutes of Tuesday’s soccer game between Rockingham and Cordova, it appeared to be an evenly-matched affair as the ball seemed to remain at a safe distance from either net.

However, once Jake Veach broke the ice for Rockingham with 19:40 remaining in the first half, the game became much more one-sided resulting in a 5-1 victory for the visiting Rockets.

Braden Baucom, who finished with a game high two goals, scored his first on a penalty kick with 12:15 remaining until the break. Less than two minutes later, Ryan Dickerson booted the ball high and just under the crossbar to give Rockingham a 3-0 advantage which they took into halftime.

Baucom’s second goal just four minutes into the second half, was followed by a 20 minute scoring drought.  With 5:33 left in the game, Gonzalo Gonzalez scored for Cordova to avoid the shutout and Dillon Veach connected for Rockingham with just 25 seconds remaining in the game to round out the scoring.

Lady Red Rams earn second blowout victory on the diamond

After defeating Cordova 16-1 in their season opener last Thursday, Hamlet’s softball team continued to flex its muscle with a 21-0 road win on Monday at Ellerbe Middle School.

Jakayla Steele blasted a one-out, 1-1 pitch over the left field fence for a three-run homer in the top of the first inning to highlight a successful day at the plate for Hamlet.  She was one of three Lady Red Rams to finish with three RBIs on the day.

Joining Steel with a trio of RBIs were Trinity Lockhart (2-for-4, three RBIs) and Madelynn Pearson (2-for-3, three RBIs).

However, it was leadoff batter Hayden Robinson who led the way for Hamlet.  Robinson finished the day 2-for-4 at the plate and recorded five RBIs. She had a two-RBI single and a two-RBI triple – both in the second inning.

In the first inning, she walked in her opening at-bat and was later hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Orena Drake went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Kinsie Lyerly drew a walk in the second inning with the bases loaded to earn an RBI.

Pearson only gave up two hits in the circle for Hamlet and struck out seven batters. Only the softball teams met as Ellerbe Middle did not field a baseball team.
