Cordova football waxes Hamlet 36-14
HAMLET - The Cordova Middle School Cavalier football team, which is comprised of players from Ellerbe Middle School and Cordova, notched a big win at in-county rival Hamlet Middle School Wednesday. Head coach Richard Kerekes’ team blew past the Red Rams by a final score of 36-14.
In a game that was controlled by Hamlet early, which took a 14-12 lead into the locker room at halftime, it was the at the Cavs who stuck 24 second-half points on the board to blow the game open. With the victory, Cordova improves to 2-0 on the season, while Hamlet drops to 0-2.
Cordova’s Tykeem Ellerbe started off the scoring with a fumble recovery and returned it for touchdown in the second quarter. The two-point try failed, and Hamlet tied the game 6-6 two plays later with a long run down the left sideline.
Cavs quarterback Emoni McBride responded quickly as he scrambled into the end zone to make the game 12-6 before Hamlet took the lead on another long run, this time down the right sideline. With the two-point conversion, the Red Rams held a narrow two-point lead at the break.
Cordova received the kick in the second half and Frazion Steele returned it deep into Red Ram territory to give the Cavs good starting field position. Dillon Locklear hammered into the end zone three plays later, as he also added the two-point conversion to give Cordova its final lead change, 20-14.
Hamlet’s second-half woes continued when it fumbled the ensuing kickoff, resulting in Cordova recovering the ball. Again, Locklear made the Rams pay as he powered his way into the end zone. Jamarion Wall added the conversion to double the lead to 28-14.
After a defensive stop, McBride hooked up with Steele for a long touchdown pass, and Messiah Shaw scored the conversion. That was the final tally of the day and the Cavs ran out the clock for the big win.
