Middle School Sports Report: Rockets slide past Red Rams in football; Hamlet girls take top cross country spot

RICHMOND COUNTY - The Richmond County Schools’ middle school fall sports season has lingered on longer than normal due to delays from two hurricanes over the last two months, but for area athletes, the schedule hasn’t had an impact on their performances.

Rockingham Middle football slides past Hamlet Middle

ROCKINGHAM - The Rockingham Middle School football team picked up a big win Tuesday against in-county rival Hamlet Middle School, as the Rockets eclipsed the Red Rams by a final score of 24-20.

Last week, Rockingham fell to Southeastern Middle School Athletic Conference leader Carver Middle School, but the win against Hamlet put the Rockets back above the .500 mark with a 3-2 overall record. Helping the Rockets to victory in the fifth game of the season was eighth grade quarterback Jaden Jenks, who threw for 75 passing yards and a touchdown.

But it was the ground game where Rockingham impressed the most, as the Rockets used three running backs to collect 261 total rushing yards and three touchdowns. Eighth grader Brandon Askins led the way with 124 rushing yards on seven carries, while fellow eighth graders Emerson Wall (72 yards on four carries) and Camron Medley (65 yards on five carries) rounded out the running game. Each of the three tailbacks had one rushing score on the afternoon.

On defense, it was the duo of eighth grader Tyson Holloway and seventh grader Jaden Brown who helped keep the Red Rams in check. Holloway had four tackles and a sack, while Brown collected a team-high six tackles.

Hamlet and Rockingham girls, Hamlet and Ellerbe boys place in cross country meet

LAURINBURG - The SEMSAC held its third cross country meet of the fall Monday at Spring Hill Middle School in Scotland County, and like they have all season, several Richmond County teams found themselves in the top three by race’s end.

Running for the second time in five days, the first meet being a disqualification-filled event at West Hoke Middle School last Thursday, it was the Hamlet Middle School girls team that emerged victorious for the second time this fall. Head coach Michelle Denson’s Lady Red Rams finished atop the time sheet with a team score of 14 points. Not far behind them were the Lady Rockets of Rockingham, who posted a team score of 36.

In the boys race, Hamlet led area teams with a second place finish (36 points), only six points behind first-place finisher Sandy Grove Middle School (Hoke County). There was a 43-point difference between Hamlet and the third-place finisher, which was Ellerbe Middle School (79 points). No individual runners’ times or finishes were reported from this meet.
