ROCKINGHAM — It was deja vu for the Richmond Senior High School girls’ basketball team Friday.

Extending their winning streak to three games, the Lady Raiders ran Scotland High School out of the gym with a running clock for the second time this week.

In what proved to be a historic night for senior point guard Jasiah Gilchrist, Richmond crushed the Lady Fighting Scots 71-8.

Between their two victories over Scotland this week, the Lady Raiders outscored the Lady Fighting Scots 135-17.

Less than a minute into the second quarter, Gilchrist completed a steal and dribbled down the court for an easy layup. That basket helped her reach and surpass the 1,000-point mark of her career.

Finishing the night with a game-high 39 points, which was also a single-game career-high, Gilchrist became the second Lady Raider hooper to reach the milestone in the past three seasons.

Former Richmond standout and current NC A&T player Jamyia Lindsey eclipsed the mark as a junior in Jan. 2024.

Playing in her 84th career game, Gilchrist averaged 11.9 points per game to reach the 1K mark. She played her freshman season at Pinecrest High School before playing for Richmond the past three seasons.

The Lady Raiders outscored Scotland 15-0 in the first quarter and carried that run into the second to take a 39-0 lead. Scotland’s first basket of the game came with 38 seconds remaining in the half.

Gilchrist scored eight points in the first, knocking down a pair of triples before adding a transition bucket off a steal.

Junior Kaniah Little scored the first five of her single-game career-high 11 points in the opening quarter. She scored a field goal and connected on a three-pointer. Junior Iyana Little, who had four points in the game, made a shot in the paint for her first two points.

Gilchrist netted the first 11 points of the second quarter by herself on a three-ball and four field goals. After the triple and the first two buckets, the horn sounded for play to stop and for Gilchrist to have a moment to soak in her achievement.

In the final 5:39 of the half, junior Madisen Jackson made a free throw, Iyana Little scored her final basket and Gilchrist scored another triple and a basket to bring her first-half total to 24 points.

Before the buzzer, a layup by Kaniah Little made it 36-0, locking in the running clock during the entirety of the second half. A free throw by freshman Amiah Streeter and another transition bucket by Kaniah Little made it 39-3 at the intermission.

Richmond outscored the Lady Fighting Scots 11-1 in the third quarter and was led by six points from Gilchrist. She made two field goals and two free throws.

Senior J’Nasia Neal scored all four of her points in the third and Jackson capped her night with another free throw.

With the clock still winding, Richmond carried a 50-4 lead into the fourth. In the final eight minutes, the Lady Raiders went on a 21-4 stretch.

Four players found the hoop in the fourth, including Gilchrist’s final nine points on four field goals and a free throw.

Streeter netted a bucket before adding a pair of three-balls to bring her total to nine points. Kaniah Little and junior Armoni Walden each had two points to end the scoring.

A quick turnaround for the Lady Raiders (3-1) will see them host non-conference Hillside High School (2-1) Saturday at 2 p.m.

The Richmond Observer will publish a photo gallery of Friday’s win soon.

The results of the JV girls’ basketball game will also be published this weekend. Also, Saturday’s JV girls’ basketball game scheduled against Hillside has been canceled.
