Mineral Springs celebrates Read Across America

ELLERBE — Multiple volunteers spent time reading to students at Mineral Springs Elementary on Wednesday for Read Across America.

Read Across America, founded in the late ‘90s by the National Education Association, is “the nation’s largest celebration of reading.”

Schools across the nation participate in what now is a yearlong program, which runs March 2-6 to commemorate the birth of author and cartoonist Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known by his pen name Dr. Seuss.

RO Managing Editor William R. Toler read to a third-grade class, bringing in two of his favorite books from childhood: Dr. Seuss’ tongue-twister classic “Oh Say Can You Say?” and Shel Silverstein’s collection of poetry “Where the Sidewalk Ends.”

Richmond County Tourism Director Meghann Lambeth — who attended Mineral Springs in her youth and worked there as a counselor from 2011-2019 — read “Me Too, Iguana” by Jacquelyn Reinach to a class of second-graders.

Other readers on Wednesday included: Ellerbe Mayor Brenda Capel; Richmond County Board of Education Member Ronald Tilman; Jeanine Hanson; Jennifer Rhyne; Amy Keller; Buffy McKenzie; Mary Kate Lambeth; Amy and Ava Berry; Jennifer Beck; Marshall Davis; Amanda Brewington; Talen Griffin; and volunteers from the Senior Center and Richmond County Partnership for Children.
